1. The $140 insoles in the trusty sneaker
Before buying a new shoe, most women try to save the old one. Podiatrist insoles, gel pads, arch supports. It's the most common first move in every forum we read.
The problem isn't under the foot. It's around it. An insole can't make a tapered toe box wider, and the heel pad flattens in weeks. $140 later, the toes are still pressed together like they're standing in line.
2. The $170 cushioned one everyone raves about
The thick-soled one. And honestly, the first hour feels wonderful. Then the day goes on.
A tall foam sole raises the heel above the toes and puts a pillow between you and the ground. Soft isn't the same as steady. Beautiful for an hour. A problem by noon.

The only shoe with comfort as its entire sales pitch, which makes this the most disappointing one to write. The stretchy collar and the memory foam feel incredible in the store.
Two weeks in, the foam has moulded flat, the knit has stretched, and there's nothing to pull snug. Even the shoe with comfort as its whole promise couldn't deliver it at the toes.
5. The wide one that's too wide
So she buys "wide". 2E, 4E, the orthopedic-looking one. And now the heel slides, the middle is baggy, and it looks like a shoe from a catalogue she didn't want to be in.
A wide shoe is the same shape, bigger. It moves the problem instead of fixing it. A foot isn't wide everywhere. It's wide at the toes and normal at the heel.

We didn't start from a shoe and make it wider. We started from an outline of a foot.
